This is a beautiful, dark red lacquer ware cigarette box and ashtray set by Maruni. The set has a lovely Bamboo pattern. This metal base lacquer ware was made in Occupied Japan in the 1940s. The box shows some wear from use scratches, chips and wear to the design from handling and measures 5 3/8" x 3 1/8" x 1 1/4" high. The 2 little ashtrays also have a bit of wear and measure 3" x 2 7/16" x 1/2" deep. The box and trays all have marks, the one on the box bottom is very worn, but the marks on the ashtrays are clear and read: Maruni / MADE BY HAND IN OCCUPIED JAPAN / METAL BASE / LACKERWARE / 57 - 104. A really great piece of 1940s Japanese tobacciana!
